The Mighty Colorado River
It rolls along, the source of key recreational activities that add economic vitality to Moab. It is the Colorado River, 1,450 miles in length.

Supplier of water to more than 29 million people, it irrigates around 3.5 million acres of farmland. The Colorado River has transformed 3.4 million acres of desert land into cities, farms and recreational playgrounds.
The river begins in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and flows through Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California. The water passes through 33 reservoirs, 990 miles of pipes, 230 miles of tunnels, 188 pumping plants, 345 diversion dams, 50 power plants and 14,590 miles of canals.
These seven states have rights to the river under the Colorado River Pact of 1922. Treaties and compacts over the years have regulated the river’s use. The water is a driving force in western politics and a control over many of the economic activities of the region. The Colorado River is easily the major river of the southwestern United States. In short, it’s pretty important.

The Colorado River is also touted as one of the best rivers in the world to raft. It has both dramatic plunges and spots of incredible calm water. Either way, this river will take you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country.
