Scenic Byways

Every trip to Moab should include a drive along at least one byway. These byways recognize and preserve roads based on their archeological, natural and scenic qualities.

Potash Scenic Utah Byway 279 follows the Colorado River past Native American petroglyphs, dinosaur tracks, and a number of delicate, naturally formed, stone arches. The byway starts three miles north of Moab on US Hwy 191. The paved road ends at the Intrepid Mining Moab Plant. This byway is 34 miles roundtrip.

Two miles north of Moab on US Hwy 191, turnoff to Utah Hwy 128, is Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway. The road is 44 miles to its last part, Cisco, and back. This is a gorgeous road with great hiking and sightseeing along the way. The highway follows the undulating Colorado River through slick rock, petrified dunes, canyons, mesas and buttes. Take your time on this road. It can be narrow in places.

Dead Horse Point Mesa Scenic Byway is Utah Hwy 313, which provides access to Dead Horse Point State Park and the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park. The view from Dead Horse Point is one of the most photographed scenic vistas in the world.
