A New Wine Country
The red rock cliffs around Moab might feel more suited to bikes and horse saddles than to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon but, like frontiersmen of the past, a band of pioneering winemakers is producing excellent wine here.
The sandy soils and long, warm growing season around Moab are ideal for many of the best grape varieties. The desert nurtures Pinot Noir grapes. The hot, dry summer days with cool nights are ideal for those quality grapes that produce Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Syrah and the above mentioned Cabs and Merlots.
Today, Moab is home to three wineries:
The best of their vintages will delight you. Spanish Valley has "produced consistently high scoring wines" according to the Wine Spectator and was awarded a silver medal in the New World International Wine Competition for their 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon. Castle Creek Winery produces red and white wines from locally grown grapes. These grapes have produced more than 30 award-winning wines.
The atmosphere at all three wineries is low-key and friendly. The wine is excellent and not expensive. The tasting rooms are uncrowded. In fact, the person pouring your wine is probably the one who has spent years making his dream come true. Tasting Room hours at Spanish Valley are Monday-Saturday from noon to 7pm or by appointment. Castle Creek Winery is being built on the site of a historic and still working ranch, Red Cliffs Lodge. The new winery building has a large production area with tasting room and gift shop. Tours and tasting are available Monday-Friday.
So lift your glasses and toast the new crop of winemakers here in the heart of spectacular Red Rock Country.
